UDDEHOLM HOTVAR
(Cold Work Steel)

A special grade recommended for applications demanding a high degree of toughness and moderate wear resistance. HOTVAR has a higher toughness than AISI S7 with the added benefit of a high temper resistance allowing it to be surface treated at high temperatures without losing its hardness. For the highest toughness requirements, a tempering temperature of 480°F can be used as long as no high temperature (>450°F) surface coatings, welding or extensive EDM of larger cross sections are expected to take place. In these cases a high tempering temperature is still preferred due to the better reduction of residual stresses.
